Is Your Workplace Violence Prevention Program Compliant in 2025?
California employers are required to maintain and train employees on a Workplace Violence Prevention Program (WVPP). While many organizations have established their plan, it’s just as important to ensure you’re managing it annually (it's not a one-and-done - it requires annual training and updating, which so many employers we've found are missing). While much attention was given to the newly required WVPP training in 2024, many employers are overlooking that it also requires annual updates and training for their entire staff. Here are key compliance points to keep in mind:
Annual Document Review & Training: Every year, employers must update their WVPP document to ensure accuracy & provide refresher training to all employees. This should be a live or recorded training that allows employees to participate and ask questions (required for all CA business or work locations once you reach 10 employees).
Additional Training: Any time new hazards are identified or the WVPP is updated, additional training must be conducted and logged.
Training & Content Requirements: Training should cover the full scope of your WVPP, including hazard identification, prevention strategies, response procedures, and reporting mechanisms. Training materials should match the educational level, literacy, and language needs of your workforce.
Site-Specific Focus: Your training should be tailored to reflect the unique hazards and policies of each worksite.
Beyond compliance, a strong WVPP fosters a safer workplace, strengthens employee confidence, and reduces organizational risk. By implementing a comprehensive Workplace Violence Prevention Program, employers not only minimize OSHA-related exposure and potential costs but also create a more secure and supportive environment for their teams.
If you haven’t reviewed your program recently, now is a good time to ensure your WVPP training is up-to-date and aligned with California OSHA requirements before the end of the year!
